Description
“Living Legend” has become synonymous with the man whose basketball artistry revolutionized the game. During his ISU residency, college basketball’s “Best Kept Secret” materialized into one of America’s most recognizable athletes.
Though Bird was one of the nation’s leading scorers and rebounders for three consecutive seasons (1976-1979), unselfishness and passing were among his greatest fortes. During the years he played for coaches Bob King and Bill Hodges, the Sycamores compiled an 81-13 record and won 33 consecutive games en route to the 1979 NCAA title game.
Larry graduated with virtually every ISU season and career scoring, rebounding and steals record and most single game marks in several categories. He was named the Sporting News, AP, UPI, USBWA and Basketball Weekly College Player of the Year in 1979 and received both the Naismith Award and the John Wooden Award. Bird was also a two-time consensus All-American and twice named the Most Valuable Player in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Drafted by the Celtics as a junior in 1978, he was selected 1980 National Basketball Association Rookie of the Year, guided the Celtics to three NBA titles, earned three MVP awards, and was a NBA All-Star each of his 12 seasons. In the 1992 Olympic Games, Bird helped the U.S. win a gold medal. In 1998, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Named Indiana Pacers head coach in 1997, Bird piloted the Indianapolis-based team to the NBA playoffs twice in two seasons.
