Leading by example, the Boston Celtics have been at the forefront of progress, advancement, and innovation of the game. The Celtics drafted Chuck Cooper, the league’s first African American selection, in the 1950 draft and went on to be the first team to field an all-Black starting lineup in 1964. Two years later in 1966, the organization would name Bill Russell head coach, the first African American head coach in NBA history. The Pioneers collection celebrates these moments and pays homage to the individuals who shaped the landscape of the NBA and the Celtics historic legacy.
